The vast majority of England and Wales use 500×250 slate, mostly due to the similarities in size to Welsh slate. When it comes to smaller sizes, for example 400×250, you will find these make an uncommon appearance throughout England & Wales. Sometimes they’re used for aesthetic purposes, or the original roof was slated in a 16×10 (imperial size) which may have been the only available material from the Welsh quarries at the time. 400×250 natural slate roof tiles are very common in Scotland. 600×300, on the other hand, offer better performance in high exposure areas and shallower pitched roofs. London, Manchester and surrounding areas are predominantly slated in 600×300 slate, with smaller pockets throughout the UK – London and Birmingham – also utilising the bigger natural roof slate.
