First and foremost, it is important to understand that roof slate very rarely comes in a true “black”. We can get quite close to it but, ultimately, Spanish and Chinese black slate sit on a spectrum of grey and can include shades of blue, grey and even green. It’s fair to say that the colour of slate is subjective, but generally we can agree on objective truths such as thickness and texture. 

Black slate is typically quarried in Spain & China. La Bana (Spain) produces a significant amount of black roof slate. The Hebra style (vertical grain) is very popular in the UK due to the similarities to Welsh slate, and La Seca style (rustic/textured) is equally popular as it offers a traditional slate finish. 

Black Chinese slate is typically found in the Shaanxi Province. The colour isn’t too dissimilar to Spanish slate, but the overall aesthetic is quite unique, and presents itself similarly to English Burlington slate.
